The Interview That Got Everyone Talking

On a December episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Sally was asked a fan-submitted question about her worst on-screen kiss. Laughing nervously, she initially wondered whether she should reveal the name.

After a bit of encouragement, Field finally admitted it was with none other than Burt Reynolds—her co-star and former boyfriend during the filming of Smokey and the Bandit.

Cohen, surprised by the confession, asked for clarification, noting that the two had been romantically involved at the time. Field explained that, while they were indeed dating, their on-screen kisses didn’t feel quite right to her. She recalled that Reynolds tended to be overly “sloppy,” which made the scenes more awkward than romantic.

A Complicated Relationship

Sally Field and Burt Reynolds met in 1977 while filming Smokey and the Bandit. Their relationship lasted about five years, and while Reynolds often spoke fondly of Field later in life, she has been more candid about the difficulties they faced.

In an interview with Variety, Field revealed that she stopped speaking with Reynolds during the last 30 years of his life. She explained that while he often looked back on their relationship with nostalgia, it wasn’t something she could revisit, saying he was “not good” for her at the time.

Despite those challenges, Field has always been admired for her grace, honesty, and humility. Fans continue to respect her for speaking openly about her experiences, both good and bad, while maintaining her legendary status in Hollywood.

Her candid admission about her most awkward on-screen kiss only makes her seem more relatable—and reminds us that even Hollywood legends have their less-than-perfect moments.
